Acne is a drag. No other way to place it. The frustrations of not knowing when you’ll have a major break out. Being constantly self conscious that public are looking at your pimples and not your smile. And acne is an copy opportunity offender. It can strike both genders, most skin types as well as varying age groups. Acne is the number one problem skin condition. Yet there is much misinformation and many unfounded myths as to what causes acne. Let’s look at the facts.
What Is Acne?
“Acne” is the common name given to skin condition that can manifest itself in a combination of the following “problems’ – blackheads, whiteheads, blocked pores (“comedones” ),pimples, pustules, boils and cysts that control non-infected pus. Acne can range from mild to severe and can come and go during various stages of your life. Acne can occur any place that you have oil producing glands (called “sebaceous glands”) and so you typically see it on the face, chest and back.
Why Acne Does It Happen?
During puberty the skin glands (sebaceous glands) that produce oil mature. The hormones needed for this process are secreted from the adrenal glands. The hormones regulate how much oil is produced. This is why for many acne shows up around puberty. Often thought of as a “teenage” problem, it can in fact start as early as 10 years of age and continue through later life. Many women experience an increase in break outs anytime their hormones swing (pregnancy, post pregnancy or with every menstrual cycle).
The oil produced by the skin glands usually escapes through the skin through pores. If too much oil is produced, or if it fails to fully escape (excess cell growth can block the ducts), then it becomes spellbound. Everyone has non-harmful bacteria living on their skin. If the oil stays under the skin the bacteria is stimulated to multiply and the resulting area becomes inflamed – you get a pimple. If the oil gets spellbound deep below the surface you can get a cyst (containing non-infected “pus”). If the oil breaks through the surface but is subdue blocked it can be seen as a white head. If it oxidizes (mixes with oxygen in the air) but is subdue “plugging” the pore the melatonin in the skin causes it to change from white to black and you have a boil.
So How Do We Stop Acne From Happening?
There are several contributing factors that cause acne. Likewise, there is no one “miracle” cure but a combination of things that must happen to improve the skin condition.
1. Lower the amount of oil being produced
2. Unplog the pores
3. Kill the bacteria
Many products are available to help with items number one and two. They will fix the symptoms of acne. To fix the CAUSE of acne, you will need to address the first item – lower the amount of oil being produced. That all comes down to lifestyle, nourishment and balancing hormones. Simple, but not simple.
